The "My" in the Mitochondria

It all started when I was explaining the evolution chapter to a student studying for the German Abitur biology exam. We got to a point where we were discussing how the mitochondria is the mighty organelle that is more or less self-sufficient and independent, having its own DNA, ribosomes, and enzymes. Then we came to the conversation stopper scientific fact: "Scientists discovered that the mitochondrial DNA was maternal DNA, which means it was only inherited from the mother" ... and then I went on to try and make a witty joke: "So we get our mitochondrion from our mothers and since the mitochondria is responsible for the majority of the energy producing reactions inside the cell, we can thank our mothers for our energy levels" with an almost obliged "haha.." from my student my brain kind of struggled to hold back the unnecessary information about the "Mitochondrial Eve" and how it has been speculated that we all actually may be related somehow.
Mitochondrial Eve is a theory framed to explain the most recent woman from whom all living humans inherited their mitochondrial DNA through an unbroken maternal line. Although at some point her offspring have stopped the progression of her mitochondrial DNA because they only gave birth to males, the concept remains to this day mesmerizing to researchers. This discovery consolidated the fact that goes back to the early stages of human creation and development, fertilization. Early during the fertilization process the egg cell is the maternal cell that is a complete cell waiting to be fertilized by a sperm, and when fertilization happens only the sperm's head penetrates the first layer covering the egg cell. The sperm's head only contains the nucleus which is theoretically half the genetic material of the father, no other organelles are contributed by the sperm at this point, since the mitochondria in the sperm is actually in the part of the cell that gets left behind outside the egg cell. And from here comes the amazing fact that the mitochondria that passed on to the developing embryo is the mitochondria originally found in the maternal egg cell.
Interestingly, this information sparks the interest of some students and they start shooting questions like: "Oh so does this mean that all of the human race have more or less the same mitochondria?" "Does this mean that all of us should theoretically have identical energy levels?" "Are you and I sisters?" ...
My answer is always high on the emotional side and I always subconsciously start by saying: "Yes, imagine that we are all carrying pieces of each other" ... which is to be honest a good way to think given that the scientific details could all be simplified in this answer. On the other hand the scientist in me started wondering and answering those innocent questions with more scientifically philosophical questions like "How could the mitochondrial DNA help humans connect to a healthier source?" ... "How could it help understand biological autonomy?" ...
These questions, I realized, weren't just about biology—they were about what it means to carry someone else's life force inside you, and whether that inheritance defines or liberates you.
In an attempt to answer those questions I found myself deviating again a little from science and connecting the scientific fact to psychology and philosophy. Imagine someone struggling with childhood trauma or the concept of motherhood in general; the trauma or the dysfunctional motherhood is real and undebatable but the fact that we are carrying our mother's mitochondria who inherited it from her grandmother through her mother, help us understand that this pain we are feeling is not only our own, It made me wonder whether, metaphorically, the pain we carry also feels older than ourselves, and in a poetic sense, could even be traced back to the "Mitochondrial Eve" herself, who represents a source of life that predates the specific trauma of a single generation.
Which is absolutely interesting and means that your energy didn't start from your mother, it is however an unbroken chain of survival and resilience stretching back approximately 15,000-20,000 years! It is in my opinion healing on its own to realize that—in a very real sense—my life force belongs to a lineage of thousands of women who survived and thrived, and it is not defined by the one or two women in my family who hurt me in one way or another.
And this epiphany naturally creates a sense of autonomy that is actually rooted in the biological makeup of your own cells: To think of it metaphorically: "Your mother provided the spark but the fire is yours—the mitochondria is now in your body and powering your choices."
Since trauma often feels isolating and we may spend years and years ruminating, mitochondrial ancestry proves we are part of a massive, global family. But here's where it gets even more interesting: while you share mitochondrial DNA with your mom, your epigenetics (how your genes are expressed) gives you genuine control over how that inheritance manifests.
Here's what that control looks like in practice: you could feel sometimes extremely discouraged and low on energy, tempted to blame it on your mother's "bad mitochondria." But then you take a 45-minute walk and suddenly feel better—maybe even motivated to start a previously procrastinated task. That shift? That's epigenetics at work. Your genes are expressing differently based on your actions, not your inheritance.
It's been proven that although all of us have theoretically inherited Mitochondrial Eve's mitochondria, our varying energy levels result from accumulated mutations over thousands of years and how epigenetics regulates that expression. The point: you're not a prisoner of what your mother passed down. You're an agent of your own biology.
But beyond the mechanisms and the data, there's something more profound waiting to be understood.
Now if you ignore the last bit of boring scientific facts written in the previous paragraph, you'd realize something that transcends pure science: "you are a walking piece of Earth, and every human you see is theoretically some sort of distant cousin!"—not in the colloquial sense, but in the profound biological sense that we all trace back to the same maternal ancestor.
There's a raw sense of meaning that naturally comes along when we think of kinship and when we recognize that we are truly not alone or self-made. We are, in a profound sense, a localized expression of a much larger concept (humanity)! To carry mitochondria is to carry—if we choose to understand it this way—proof that isolation is an illusion—that the boundaries we draw around ourselves are arbitrary when measured against the cellular truth of our shared ancestry. When you look at a stranger on the street, you're looking at someone whose mitochondria trace back to the same ancient mother as yours, someone whose cells are powered by the same evolutionary inheritance. This scientific reality becomes something more—not just poetic, but biological fact transformed into a reason to feel connected, to feel less alone in our struggles, and to recognize that healing isn't just personal—it's part of a much older, much larger story of survival.
